In the winter of 2019, the life of 17-year-old Luis Miguel Ortiz was tragically cut short in his Albuquerque, New Mexico home. The Hispanic male was hosting a party on the evening of December 16th when the celebration turned into a scene of unimaginable grief. A stray bullet, fired from outside the residence in the 600 block of Bataan SW, penetrated the home and struck Luis in the head. Despite immediate efforts, the young man succumbed to his injuries, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.

The investigation into the senseless shooting revealed a string of violent crimes that had been plaguing the area. A group of teenagers was reportedly engaged in a spree of armed carjackings, robberies, and drive-by shootings. It was during one of these drive-by incidents that the fatal shot was fired. For a time, the case remained unsolved, adding to the anguish of Luis's family and community, who remembered him as a kind, intelligent, and humorous individual with an inventive spirit.

A significant breakthrough in the case came in September 2022 with the arrest of Izaiah Ruiz. He was just 14 years old at the time of the shooting and was identified as one of the individuals involved in the crime spree that led to Ortiz's death. Ruiz was subsequently charged with murder. While the investigation indicated the involvement of other teenagers in the wave of violent acts, Ruiz was the primary suspect publicly identified and arrested in direct connection with the death of Luis Miguel Ortiz.
