In a tragic turn of events on April 5, 2023, 16-year-old Hispanic male Eddwin Ramos-Figueroa lost his life in North Las Vegas, Nevada, following a robbery attempt that escalated into violence. Ramos-Figueroa, along with two other juveniles, allegedly tried to rob another 16-year-old boy. The encounter took a fatal turn when gunfire erupted, and Ramos-Figueroa was struck.
He was quickly transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The immediate aftermath saw the two juveniles who were with Ramos-Figueroa flee the scene. However, their freedom was short-lived as North Las Vegas police identified and apprehended them. Both were subsequently booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation also identified the shooter as the intended victim of the robbery.
Further legal proceedings revealed the shooter to be 15-year-old Gabriel Ayala. In a court hearing, it was argued that after being beaten and robbed by a group of boys, Ayala went home to retrieve a gun. The prosecution contended that Ayala was no longer in immediate danger and should have contacted the police or sought medical attention instead of returning to the scene. According to the account presented in court, Ayala's mother was driving him, presumably to the hospital, when they spotted the individuals from the earlier assault. It was then that Ayala allegedly exited the vehicle and shot Ramos-Figueroa in the back as he was trying to leave.
The defense argued that Ayala had been assaulted multiple times and feared for his family's safety, stating that the boys who assaulted him were waiting outside his apartment complex that morning. Despite these arguments, a judge determined that Ayala would be tried as an adult. The court noted that Ayala had other options available to him and had a prior record, having been placed on probation for carrying a concealed weapon.
