In the early evening of October 2, 2023, the life of 21-year-old Jimmy Smith III, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in his North Las Vegas home. At approximately 4 p.m., North Las Vegas police responded to a report of a shooting in the 20 block of Hoke Edward Court. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Clark County coroner's office later confirmed that his death was a homicide resulting from these injuries. The shooting occurred in the presence of his girlfriend and two children, shattering the peace of their home.
The investigation into the death of Jimmy Smith III led to the swift apprehension of three individuals. The day after the shooting, on October 3, authorities arrested 21-year-old Keara Drayer in connection with the murder. She was charged with open murder and challenging to fight with a deadly weapon. Later, on October 25, the multi-jurisdictional Criminal Apprehension Team apprehended a second suspect, 20-year-old Tavion Tinsley, at an apartment complex near Jones and Charleston boulevards. Tinsley was also charged with murder. A third suspect, 19-year-old Ava Rayburn, was subsequently arrested in relation to the incident.
Described by his family as a loving brother, son, boyfriend, and an outstanding father to his two children, Jimmy Smith III was known for putting his family first. He had a passion for music and was dedicated to his work in the studio. In the wake of his violent death, his family expressed their devastation and set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for his children. Friends and family remembered him as someone who could light up a room with his humorous personality, a talented and funny individual who was a great father and a wonderful son.
