On June 10, 2024, a reunion between childhood friends in Las Vegas, Nevada, ended in tragedy, claiming the life of 23-year-old Xzavier Maheia, a Black / African American male. The fatal shooting occurred at a residence near Eastern Avenue and Charleston Boulevard, where Maheia was shot multiple times.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Isaiah Branch, a 25-year-old man who was reportedly a childhood friend of Maheia. The two had recently reconnected and decided to get together.
Branch, accompanied by his girlfriend, met with Maheia and began drinking vodka. Later, at Maheia's home, Branch became ill and expressed a desire to leave.
The situation escalated when Branch and his girlfriend attempted to depart. Accounts of what transpired next differ among the witnesses, who included Branch, his girlfriend, and Maheia's sister. An alleged physical altercation broke out, reportedly involving all four individuals. Branch's girlfriend sustained a broken nose and bruising around her eye during the struggle. Branch claimed that during the fight, Maheia reached for a gun that was in Branch's pocket, prompting Branch to fire multiple times. Maheia was struck in the chest, arms, stomach, back, and legs.
Following the shooting, Branch fled the scene in a black vehicle. He later contacted the police from a location near Fremont Street and was arrested on the same day. He now faces a charge of open murder. Investigators found that physical evidence at the scene did not align with the statements provided by Branch and his girlfriend. Surveillance footage from the home captured the sound of approximately 21 gunshots fired in rapid succession.
