An argument in Minneapolis’s Elliot Park neighborhood on the afternoon of April 3, 2023, ended the life of Antone Rico Anderson, a 34-year-old White man from the nearby suburb of Hopkins. The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Park Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing a dispute followed by a single gunshot. When police arrived, they found neighbors performing CPR on Anderson, who had been shot in the chest. Paramedics transported him to Hennepin Healthcare, where he was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

Investigators quickly determined the shooting was not a random act, believing Anderson knew the person who shot him. According to Anderson’s girlfriend, who was with him that day, they were at the home of the suspect’s parents when the suspect arrived and began arguing with Anderson. The man was identified as 19-year-old Jackson Gregory Robertson. The confrontation escalated, with Robertson allegedly threatening to shoot Anderson and telling him to meet him outside.

Anderson then went outside holding a knife. His girlfriend told police that she did not see the shooting but heard a “pop.” Surveillance video from a nearby building showed Robertson running into an alley and boarding a Metro Transit bus after the incident. Further surveillance video and audio from the bus captured Robertson talking on the phone about the shooting, which aided investigators in their case.

Authorities arrested Robertson and charged him with second-degree unintentional murder and carrying a pistol in public without a permit. During a post-Miranda interview, Robertson admitted to shooting Anderson but claimed he had acted in self-defense. He also told investigators he did not have the firearm used in the shooting and could not say where it was.

The case concluded in the spring of 2024. On April 15, Robertson entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to second-degree murder. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss the charge for illegally possessing a pistol. On April 29, 2024, a judge sentenced Jackson Gregory Robertson to six years in prison, giving him credit for 385 days he had already served.
