On a warm summer evening in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the vibrant sounds of a punk rock show filled the backyard of a house venue known as Nudieland. The date was August 11, 2023, and for Nicholas Trevor August Golden, a 35-year-old musician, it was a night of community and shared passion. Tragically, it would be his last. The joyous atmosphere was shattered when two individuals, who were not part of the close-knit community, unleashed a hail of gunfire into the crowd of 30 to 50 people.
When the chaos subsided, Nicholas Golden lay dead from a gunshot wound to the chest, and six other individuals were injured.
The aftermath of the shooting sent ripples of grief and fear through the Minneapolis punk and LGBTQ+ communities, where Golden was a beloved figure. Known to his friends as August, he was remembered as a talented songwriter and a beautiful human who had moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to friends and his girlfriend. He was the lead singer and guitarist for the punk band Scrounger and was deeply involved in the DIY ethos of the music scene. Many who attended the concert at Nudieland, a known safe space, identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community, and the senseless violence struck at the heart of their sanctuary.
The investigation into the mass shooting led to the arrests of two teenage suspects. Dominic J. Burris and Cyrell E. Boyd, both 17 at the time of the incident, were charged in connection with the deadly attack. Witnesses reported that prior to the shooting, the two had made "insensitive," "hostile," and "queerphobic" comments to attendees. The charges brought against them included aiding and abetting second-degree murder and multiple counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. In a step towards justice for Nicholas Golden and the other victims, one of the teens was sentenced to 23 years in prison. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office announced the charges, highlighting that the suspects were not known to the concert-goers and had made biased remarks, adding a layer of hate-fueled tragedy to the loss of a vibrant life.
