On the evening of May 30, 2024, a tragic series of events unfolded in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis, leading to the death of 32-year-old Os Said Jimale. A Black male, Jimale was found deceased inside an apartment on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds in what was ruled a homicide.
Police were initially called to the area around 5:15 p.m.
following reports of a double shooting inside the apartment building. Upon a search of the premises, officers discovered Jimale, who may have been a resident of the building. In the same apartment, they found another man, Mohamed Bashir Aden, who had also been shot and was critically injured; Aden later succumbed to his injuries on June 7.
The incident escalated when Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell, one of the first to respond, encountered a man he believed to be an injured victim a couple of blocks from the apartment. This individual, later identified as 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, ambushed the officer, fatally shooting him. Another officer who arrived at the scene exchanged gunfire with Mohamed, who was ultimately killed.
Investigators believe that Mohamed was acquainted with the two individuals shot inside the apartment and is the suspect in their shootings. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the double homicide at the apartment and the subsequent use-of-force incident involving the officers. At the time of the incident, Mohamed had active warrants for his arrest and was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous felony convictions.
