On the night of August 31, 2024, Kadar Jibril, a 27-year-old Ethiopian man, was walking home from a barbershop in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis. Having been in the United States for only a year, he was just three blocks from the cafe where he worked, making his way along a sidewalk on the 2900 block of South Grand Avenue shortly before 11:00 p.m. He was accompanied by another man in his 20s.
Suddenly, the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Both Jibril and his companion were struck. When Minneapolis police officers arrived at the scene around 10:47 p.m., they found Jibril with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical aid from the officers and emergency responders, his injuries were too severe, and he died at the scene. His companion was transported to Hennepin Healthcare with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The preliminary investigation suggests that Jibril and the other man were part of a group on the sidewalk when the shots were fired. The suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot immediately after the shooting.
