On New Year's Day 2023, a grim discovery was made in a rural ditch in Miami County, Kansas. A passerby found 41-year-old Hispanic female, Jennifer Christine Rodriguez of Belton, Missouri, suffering from a gunshot wound near 299th Street and Somerset Road in the vicinity of Paola. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene around 7:30 p.m., and Rodriguez was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
She succumbed to her injuries two days later, on January 3, 2023.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect in the shooting, 36-year-old John R. Gray of Grandview, Missouri. Authorities alleged that Rodriguez and Gray had left his home together on that Sunday and driven into Miami County. It is believed that Gray shot Rodriguez while she was inside his white pickup truck. After the shooting, he allegedly removed her from the vehicle and left her in the ditch before returning to his residence.
The investigation took a turn when, on Tuesday, officers with the Grandview Police Department found John R. Gray deceased inside his home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His pickup truck was towed from the driveway to be processed by forensic investigators. The Miami County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Rodriguez was a mother of three children and was remembered by her family as a beautiful and one-of-a-kind person. Her niece organized a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses and to support her children.
