On a tragic Friday afternoon, February 4, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Haley Marie Powell, a White/Caucasian female from Derby, Kansas, was cut short in a devastating act of violence. The incident unfolded outside the Trails at Derby Apartments, where Powell resided. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene around 4 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Powell critically injured with at least one gunshot wound.
She was rushed to Wesley Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses at the apartment complex identified the shooter as 21-year-old Tiryn Young, who also lived in the same complex. Young fled the scene after the shooting, prompting a search by law enforcement. Police later located him at the Derby Golf & Country Club, situated about a mile north of the apartments. As officers approached and began to chase him on the golf course, Young was a considerable distance ahead when he turned a gun on himself, inflicting a fatal head wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the deaths of Powell and Young concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide stemming from domestic violence, according to Derby Police Chief Robert Lee. As the sole suspect in Powell's murder took his own life, no arrests were made in the case. Haley Powell was remembered as a young mother to a 15-month-old son named Lincoln and had aspirations of becoming a teacher. A GoFundMe was established to help with funeral costs and to support her young son. A celebration of her life was held on February 17, 2022, at the Cozine Life Events Center.
