On a tragic Saturday evening, October 6, 2018, the life of 33-year-old Kristin Florio-Gile, a Caucasian female and devoted mother of six, was violently cut short in Derby, Kansas. She had been desperately trying to escape an abusive marriage and had recently moved with her children into her parents' home. Believing her estranged husband, Randy "Rocky" Gile, also 33, was in jail for violating a protective order, Kristin and her father, Richard Florio, went to her former home to retrieve some of
her belongings. This belief would prove to be a fatal miscalculation.
Unbeknownst to them, Randy Gile had rented a car and was lying in wait. As Kristin and her father drove away from the house, he began a terrifying pursuit. The chase turned violent as Randy opened fire on his father-in-law's truck, injuring him. Richard Florio attempted to position his vehicle between his daughter's SUV and her pursuer, even ramming Randy's car twice in a desperate bid to protect her. However, Randy managed to continue his chase, ultimately forcing Kristin's SUV off the road and into a barbed wire fence.
With her vehicle disabled, Kristin was defenseless. Randy Gile approached her and shot her multiple times, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound to her head. In the immediate aftermath of murdering his estranged wife, Randy Gile turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. The horrific event unfolded on a stretch of road on the northeast side of Derby. When law enforcement arrived, they found both Kristin and Randy deceased at the scene. An autopsy later revealed that Randy Gile had methamphetamine in his system at the time of the murder-suicide.
The investigation that followed brought to light a history of domestic violence. Kristin had taken legal steps to protect herself and her children, including obtaining a protective order against her husband. Just three weeks before her death, she had fled their home with her children after he allegedly pointed a gun at her. He had been arrested for felony aggravated assault but was released on bond. At the time of the murder, there was an active order for his arrest for violating the protective order. No arrests were made in Kristin's death as the sole suspect took his own life.
