In the midst of Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans on the evening of February 19, 2023, tragedy struck along the bustling parade route. Roderick Tobias, a 15-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted as the Krewe of Bacchus parade was in progress. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to four other individuals, unfolded on St.
Charles Avenue at Terpsichore Street, casting a somber shadow over the city's signature celebration.
The gunfire sent shockwaves through the crowd of parade-goers, transforming a scene of revelry into one of chaos and fear. When the violence subsided, Tobias was left as the sole fatality of the mass shooting. The community was left to grapple with the senseless loss of a young life amidst what should have been a joyous occasion.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification of a suspect. Twenty-one-year-old Mansour Mbodj was arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in the death of Roderick Tobias.
