In the early hours of Saturday, April 15, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Jakai Quinn was tragically cut short in a triple shooting in the St. Claude neighborhood of New Orleans. Jakai, a student at Warren Easton Charter High School/The Net Gentilly, was known by his friends as 'Kglizzy' and had a passion for rap music, leaving behind lyrics that reflected his love for the art form.
Born in Houston, Texas, on May 15, 2006, he was a beloved son, brother, and friend.
At approximately 1:03 a.m., New Orleans police responded to a call of a shooting in the 1100 block of Bartholomew Street. Upon arrival, they found Jakai and a 15-year-old female with gunshot wounds. Jakai was pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim, a 17-year-old male, later arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound sustained in the same incident. According to his mother, Tamika Profit, Jakai was sitting in a car with a friend, about to leave, when another car approached and opened fire.
The investigation into Jakai Quinn's murder remains ongoing, and as of recent reports, no arrests have been made. His family continues to seek justice. The case is still listed as an open investigation by Crimestoppers GNO, with his mother expressing the profound and continuous pain of her loss. A Celebration of Life Service was held for Jakai on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at New Philippians Missionary Baptist Church, where he was remembered by a host of family and friends.
