John Hurley, a 53-year-old male of Irish ethnicity, was a dedicated officer of the New Orleans Police Department. On April 4, 1892, Hurley was fatally shot on Gallatin Street near Hospital Street. The incident occurred when Hurley intervened in a fight between two men. One of the men, a known criminal who had recently been pardoned from prison by Governor Francis T. Nichols, pulled out a pistol and shot Hurley in the heart.
