In the spring of 2013, a day that should have been a celebration for a teenager on the cusp of graduation turned into a tragedy that left a family searching for answers. Sixteen-year-old Ke'Shawn Bell, a male, was attending a 'Senior Skip Day' at Pontchartrain Park in New Orleans on March 21, 2013. At some point during the festivities, he reportedly walked away from the crowd with two other individuals.
What transpired in the moments that followed remains unclear, but it ended with Ke'Shawn's untimely death.
Just before 6:00 p.m. that evening, his body was discovered near the railroad tracks at the intersection of Prentiss Street and Providence Place. A resident in the area had heard noises that were dismissed as fireworks, only later was it understood to be the sound of fatal gunshots. Ke'Shawn had been fatally shot, found lying face down in an area not far from where he was last seen by his peers.
The investigation into Ke'Shawn's homicide was launched by the New Orleans Police Department, but the case quickly grew cold. Months after the shooting, in November 2013, authorities publicly sought two persons of interest, 18-year-old Danny Brown and 17-year-old Danshaun Hampton, who they believed might have information about the incident but stressed they were not considered suspects. Despite these efforts and the pleas from Ke'Shawn's mother, who believes witnesses at the park hold crucial information, no one has ever been arrested in connection with the murder. The case remains unsolved, leaving a family to grieve and a community with unanswered questions about the violent end to a young life.
