In the early evening of May 3, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Rasheed Kamal Carmouche was cut short in a fatal shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana. Carmouche was walking along the 2700 block of East Simcoe Street when he was shot. The Lafayette Police Department responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 6:07 p.m. and found Carmouche suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers on the scene immediately began to render life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Despite their efforts, Carmouche was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Born in Dallas, Texas, on September 28, 1996, Rasheed was known by his loved ones as a father, brother, and friend with a contagious smile. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family, including his parents, daughter, five siblings, and a close friend. His death left a void in the lives of his extensive family, which included his grandparents, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
The investigation into the shooting led by homicide detectives quickly identified a suspect. Thomas Woods, a 29-year-old from Lafayette, was arrested in connection with the death of Carmouche. Investigators determined that Woods was the individual who shot Carmouche as he was walking down the street. The initial police response was to the 2500 block of East Simcoe Street, but further investigation revealed the shooting actually took place in the 2700 block.
Following his arrest, Thomas Woods was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. He is facing charges of one count of second-degree murder and one count of illegal discharge of weapons for his alleged role in the death of Rasheed Kamal Carmouche.
