In the warm twilight of a midsummer's evening in Shreveport, Louisiana, the life of John Henry Ruffin Jr., a 41-year-old male, was tragically cut short. On July 15, 2023, violence erupted outside a downtown nightclub, shattering the night's revelry with the sound of gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Ruffin was fatally wounded, and another man was injured.
The incident was part of a particularly violent weekend in the city, prompting public statements from local officials decrying the bloodshed.
The investigation into the shooting moved forward, and before long, authorities identified a suspect. Brandon Batiste, a 29-year-old from Shreveport, was implicated in the deadly encounter. The Caddo Parish Grand Jury handed down an indictment, formally charging Batiste with several serious crimes. The charges included the second-degree murder of John Henry Ruffin Jr., as well as the attempted second-degree murder of the other man wounded in the shooting.
