Four-year-old Keith Jermal Jones Jr. died from a gunshot wound on Thursday, July 20, 2023. The events that led to this tragedy began to come to light when the New Orleans Police Department responded to a call of a person shot at approximately 10:30 p.m.
in the 6900 block of Lake Kenilworth. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the young boy with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. Further investigation suggested that the actual shooting occurred at a residence in the 7000 block of Martin Drive.
In the aftermath of the devastating event, the boy's father, Keith Jones Sr., turned himself in to the authorities. Family members indicated that he felt responsible for the incident, which they characterized as a 'freak accident.' According to the child's mother, there was a gun in the house that the young boy found. Feeling the weight of the situation, Keith Jones Sr. was booked by the New Orleans Police Department on one count of negligent homicide and was taken to the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
