In the late afternoon warmth of a New Orleans day, tragedy struck at the intersection of Egania and North Prieur streets in the Lower Ninth Ward. On August 16, 2023, 44-year-old Orethean Morgan, a male, was caught in a burst of gunfire that shattered the neighborhood's calm. The violent encounter left him with fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man was also struck by the gunfire and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The New Orleans Police Department responded to the incident shortly after 4:45 p.m., quickly cordoning off the area to begin their investigation into the double shooting.
