In the quiet community of Fort Mitchell, Alabama, the life of 46-year-old Dwight Carlton Jones was abruptly ended on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. Reports from the Russell County Sheriff's Office indicate that deputies responded to a call of gunshots on Apache Trail at approximately 8:45 in the morning. Upon their arrival, they discovered Dwight Jones suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite attempts to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. Shortly after the incident, 19-year-old Kamali Jones was located by authorities near the intersection of Moss Oak Drive and Muscle Wood Drive and was taken into custody. Investigators believe the tragic event stemmed from a domestic dispute. According to Sheriff Heath Taylor, Kamali Jones had a relationship with Dwight Jones's niece and had gone to the residence that morning wanting to see their two-day-old baby. An argument is said to have erupted between Dwight Jones and Kamali Jones in the front yard, escalating to the point where the fatal shots were fired. It was also noted that there had been prior reports of domestic violence between Kamali Jones and the victim's niece.
Kamali Jones has been charged with murder and shooting into an occupied residence. The weapon believed to have been used in the incident was a nine-millimeter handgun. Dwight Jones, known to many as 'VA,' was remembered as a husband, father, and grandfather with a large personality who was deeply devoted to his family.
