In the fall of 2023, the life of 39-year-old Kalin Rachelle Cormier of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Cormier was fatally shot in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded in Henderson, where Cormier was with her daughter.
The man identified as the suspect in Cormier's death was her former boyfriend.
He reportedly followed Cormier and her daughter to a business in Henderson and opened fire into their vehicle. Both women sustained gunshot wounds in the attack. Cormier died from her injuries at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center. Her daughter was also injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. His escape involved a carjacking in a Walmart parking lot in Eunice. He was later apprehended by St. Martin Parish sheriff's deputies at the Atchafalaya Welcome Center in Butte La Rose. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Further investigation into the tragic event revealed a history of domestic abuse. Court records indicated that the suspect had a documented history of violating protective orders taken out by Cormier's daughter. These violations included multiple counts of domestic abuse battery and theft of a firearm. At the time of her death, Kalin Cormier was a mother to two daughters and a grandmother to one grandchild. She was remembered by her family as a hardworking and meticulous person who had a deep passion for her family, especially her daughters and granddaughter. She enjoyed simple pleasures like watching Hallmark movies, cooking, and maintaining a clean home. In the months leading up to her death, she had been attending Bible studies and found joy in the fellowship.
