On a warm August evening in 2019 in New Iberia, Louisiana, 17-year-old Garon Paul Atkinson Lewis was filled with the simple anticipation of a date night. An African American student and promising athlete at New Iberia Senior High School, he had dreams of following in his mother's footsteps to become a nurse.
