A 16-year-old male named LaTaurus Smith was a junior at Zachary High School where he was known by family as a well-mannered kid who enjoyed video games and basketball. On the night of Saturday, December 2, 2023, he was one of over a thousand people attending the 'Big Bonfire Party,' an event featuring an ATV trail ride and live music on West Port Hudson Plains Road in Zachary, Louisiana.
The festivities were shattered around 8:20 p.m. when gunfire broke out.
In the chaos that followed, Smith was fatally wounded. When deputies from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office arrived, they discovered Smith unresponsive; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were also shot, and several others sustained minor injuries as attendees scrambled to escape the area. Following the incident, Zachary High School officials announced that grief counseling would be available for students and staff to help them cope with the loss of their classmate.
In the early morning hours of December 3, 2023, authorities arrested 32-year-old Lamar Hall of Baton Rouge in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently charged with principal to first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. During an interview with detectives, Hall admitted his involvement, stating that he had fired his weapon because there was a 'large shoot-out' occurring with other unknown individuals at the event. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office indicated that other unidentified suspects were also detained for their alleged involvement as the investigation into the shooting continues.
