In the early evening of December 20, 2023, a verbal dispute in the 2600 block of Convention Street in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, escalated with tragic finality. Derrick Broadway, a 44-year-old Black male, was shot during the altercation. The incident occurred at approximately 7:19 p.m. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Broadway was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Baton Rouge Police Department's Homicide Division immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 27-year-old Travell Winfrey. Investigators began the process of locating Winfrey, who had fled the state following the incident. The search for the suspect extended beyond Louisiana, involving the cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies.
Nearly a month after the shooting, on January 18, 2024, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Travell Winfrey in Huntersville, North Carolina. Following his arrest, Winfrey was extradited back to Louisiana to face charges related to Broadway's death. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count of second-degree murder. The investigation remains ongoing as the legal process against Winfrey proceeds. Funeral services for Derrick Broadway were held on February 10, 2024, at Hall Davis and Sons Funeral Home, with his interment at Roselawn Memorial Park.
