In the evening hours of Sunday, May 20, 2018, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Baton Rouge neighborhood, leaving one man dead and another wounded. Kelvin Denardo Howard, a 41-year-old U.S. Army veteran, was fatally shot in the 500 block of 17th Street. When police responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m., they discovered Howard, who was pronounced dead from his injuries.
A second victim, a 32-year-old male, was also found at the scene and transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Baton Rouge Police detectives identified Deandre Hollins as the individual they believe was responsible for the gunfire, which reportedly erupted following an altercation. A warrant was issued for Hollins' arrest on multiple serious charges, including second-degree murder for the death of Kelvin Howard. He was also sought on charges of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and aggravated assault. Hollins was to be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison upon his apprehension.
