On New Year's Day of 2024, a grim discovery was made in New Orleans, marking a tragic start to the year. The decomposing body of 27-year-old Eddie Lee Rodrigue, Jr., a male resident of the city, was found concealed under a mattress on Burke Street. An investigation swiftly determined that Rodrigue had been shot to death, making his case the first homicide of the year in New Orleans.
The subsequent investigation into Rodrigue's death was aided by a piece of technology he was wearing.
At the time of his disappearance around December 14th of the previous year, Rodrigue had been on electronic monitoring for a pending drug charge. When his ankle bracelet sent a tamper alert, it provided investigators with his last known location. This electronic trail proved to be a crucial element in piecing together the events that led to his death.
Months later, a suspect was identified and apprehended. Joseph McInnis was arrested in connection with the murder of Eddie Rodrigue. Authorities allege that following the murder, McInnis removed Rodrigue's ankle monitor and discarded it in a dumpster in an attempt to conceal the crime. After a period of hiding from law enforcement, during which he also removed his own ankle bracelet, McInnis was taken into custody.
Joseph McInnis was subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Jail and is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, tampering with an electronic monitoring device, and obstruction of justice. He is being held on a bail of over a million dollars. The case has been highlighted as an instance where electronic monitoring played a significant role in solving a murder. Eddie Rodrigue, who had attended Sarah T. Reed High School and had aspirations of becoming a Registered Nurse, was remembered by his family and friends in a memorial service on January 11, 2024.
