Nevaeh Carter, a 17-year-old Black/African American female from Charlotte, was killed in the early hours of May 31, 2025, when gunfire struck the car she was sitting in at the intersection of North Graham Street and West Craighead Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers responded around 1:59–2:00 a.m. and found her inside the vehicle with a fatal gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police publicly identified her later that day and opened a homicide investigation through the CMPD Homicide Unit.
In the days that followed, her family described a bright teenager whose life had been cut short by a drive-by shooting, and local outlets noted she was a Monroe High School student. Community members gathered in early July to call for justice and to keep attention on the case as detectives continued to seek leads from the public.
As of the most recent reports, police have not announced any arrests and have not publicly named a suspect. Authorities continue to ask anyone with information to contact CMPD or Crime Stoppers while the investigation remains active.
