On December 13, 2024, 42-year-old Lashunda Shmicka McLendon was fatally shot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. in the 300 block of Archdale Drive, where officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arrival, they found McLendon with a gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier that day, McLendon and 43-year-old Ebonee Makeesa Rahman were involved in a verbal altercation. Surveillance footage from the Archdale Minimart captured Rahman approaching McLendon, removing her jacket, and engaging in a physical confrontation. Rahman then walked toward the parking lot, met an unidentified man, retrieved a handgun from his jacket, returned to McLendon—who was seated in a chair—and shot her in the chest. After the shooting, Rahman picked up her jacket, walked to her vehicle, and fled the scene.
Rahman was arrested on December 14, 2024, and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. She is currently held in the Mecklenburg County Jail without bond. McLendon's family has expressed concerns that others, particularly the unidentified man who provided the firearm, should also be held accountable. McLendon's death has deeply affected her family and the local community. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with funeral expenses, highlighting the void left by her untimely passing. Her funeral service was held on December 21, 2024, at the Bennie Blakely Jr. Memorial Chapel in Monroe, North Carolina. The incident has also raised concerns about recurring violence in the Archdale Drive area, prompting calls for increased police presence and community vigilance to prevent further tragedies.
