In the early hours of April 1st, a burst of violence at a Baton Rouge nightclub claimed the life of 26-year-old Timotheus Bowie Jr. The fatal shooting occurred shortly after midnight inside the Palace Night Club located on Scenic Highway. Following the incident, Bowie was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department did not immediately identify a suspect or a motive for the shooting, which happened during a particularly violent Easter weekend in the city.
Months later, a breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of Marquis Payne. Baton Rouge Police Homicide detectives took Payne, who was 21 years old at the time of his arrest, into custody in July and charged him with the second-degree murder of Timotheus Bowie Jr. Payne was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
The legal proceedings against Payne moved forward, and in November, a grand jury formally indicted him on the murder charge. Further details surrounding the motive for the shooting have not been widely reported. At the time of his arrest for the homicide, it was also noted that Payne had been arrested in August along with four other individuals in connection with a raid on multiple homes suspected of being part of a drug ring.
