On May 1, 2024, the Winnfield Police Department responded to a tragic incident in the Hatfield neighborhood, where two individuals were found deceased. The victims were identified as 20-year-old Amyria McDonald of Winnfield and 21-year-old Virgil Smith Jr. of the Natchitoches area. Preliminary investigations suggest that Smith fatally shot McDonald before turning the gun on himself.
