An 18-year-old woman’s life was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of May 20, 2024, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Enijua Turks, a female, was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted in the parking lot of a Whataburger restaurant located in the 2500 block of West Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. The incident unfolded around 1:40 a.m. amidst what police described as a large and chaotic gathering of teenagers and young adults.
Responding to reports of gunfire, officers arrived to a
tumultuous scene. They discovered that a confrontation between at least two armed individuals had escalated into violence. Enijua Turks was found inside a car, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported her to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival, at approximately 2:06 a.m. A second victim, a 19-year-old woman, was also shot, suffering non-life-threatening injuries to her arm and leg.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit launched an extensive investigation. Patrol officers on the scene were able to detain an individual identified as the shooter. For a time, no formal arrests were announced as detectives continued their work in conjunction with the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office to determine the appropriate course of action.
Two months later, on July 23, 2024, an arrest was made in connection with the death of Enijua Turks. The Shreveport Police Department announced that they had charged 18-year-old Michael Casey III with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder. Investigators revealed that Casey was already incarcerated at the Caddo Correctional Center on unrelated charges when the warrant for the murder of Enijua Turks was served. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting is ongoing.
