In the late hours of a Sunday in Shreveport, Louisiana, a dispute between a couple escalated into a tragedy that would end a life and lead to a desperate manhunt. On the evening of February 16, 2020, 43-year-old Tasha Mayberry, a female, was involved in a heated argument with her boyfriend, Gregory Jones. The disagreement reportedly began when she refused to let him borrow her car.
In the driveway of their home, the argument took a fatal turn when Jones produced a 9mm handgun and shot Mayberry multiple times in her upper body and leg.
Shreveport Police patrol officers were dispatched to the intersection of West 73rd Street and Union Avenue following reports of the dispute and shots being fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered Tasha Mayberry inside a vehicle, suffering from critical gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Ochsner LSU Health for medical attention, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Investigators quickly identified Gregory Jones as the primary suspect in the homicide. A warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. The search for Jones was intensive, with detectives working through the night. They eventually tracked him to an apartment complex on Bernstein Avenue. Initially searching one apartment without success, they heard a noise in an adjacent vacant unit. Inside, they found Jones hiding in a closet. When confronted, he pointed a firearm at the officers. In response, an officer fired, striking Jones at least once in the upper body. He was then taken to the same hospital as his victim with what were initially described as life-threatening injuries, though he was expected to recover. At the time of this incident, Jones already had outstanding warrants related to domestic abuse and assault. In a related development, an 18-year-old relative of the victim, Tristan Mayberry, was also arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder.
Following his recovery, Gregory Earl Jones faced the judicial system for his actions. In April 2023, a jury found the 40-year-old guilty of the second-degree murder of Tasha Mayberry. The conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison, bringing a measure of closure to a violent and tragic case that stemmed from a domestic dispute.
