The investigation into her death led to the identification of a suspect, Michael Elijah Rachal, who was 23 years old at the time. It was revealed that Rachal had been living at Rayson's home, and on the day of the incident, she was in the process of evicting him. A heated argument ensued as they moved his belongings to the carport. Rayson's younger sister, who was inside the house, heard gunshots and witnessed Rachal fleeing the scene. He reportedly told the sister that Rayson had shot herself. However, the evidence collected at the scene, which included five shell casings, and witness accounts of multiple gunshots, contradicted this claim.
