In the summer of 2023, the life of 42-year-old Temika Hunt was tragically cut short in what police have described as a murder-suicide. On July 3rd, officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department were dispatched to an apartment in the 7300 block of Monsey Circle in the Okolona neighborhood after receiving a call about a foul odor emanating from one of the residences.
This call for a welfare check led to a grim discovery that would sadden the community.
Upon entering the apartment, law enforcement found Ms. Hunt deceased from a gunshot wound. Alongside her was the body of 55-year-old John Whiteside Jr., who also had a fatal gunshot wound. The initial investigation by the LMPD's Homicide Unit led them to believe that Whiteside shot and killed Hunt before turning the gun on himself. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed the identities of both individuals.
The exact time of the shooting remains unclear, as neighbors only became aware of a potential issue due to the persistent and worsening odor that had lingered for days. One neighbor reported noticing flies around the doorway and suspected something was terribly wrong, prompting the call to the property management and subsequently the police. The tragic event left neighbors in the apartment complex shocked and saddened, with many expressing their sorrow for the families involved.
