On a summer evening in Covington, Kentucky, the life of 34-year-old Edgar Lopez Jr. was cut short in a burst of violence. On August 8, 2023, what began as a physical altercation on Russell Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard escalated into a fatal shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they found Lopez with gunshot wounds. Another man was also injured, not from the gunfire, but from the fight that preceded it.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a grim sequence of
events. An argument had reportedly started at a different location and culminated in the deadly confrontation on Russell Street. Investigators identified two individuals connected to the incident. One was Brian Gray, who was allegedly involved in the initial fight with Lopez and was subsequently charged with second-degree assault. Witnesses reported that Gray struck Lopez with a brick during their struggle.
The second and primary suspect in the shooting was identified as Dazzamon Raheem Jones. Following the issuance of a warrant for murder, Jones turned himself in to the authorities. The investigation suggested that the shooting was an act of retaliation for the fight between Lopez and Gray. Evidence presented during legal proceedings included video footage that prosecutors said showed Jones firing a rifle into Lopez's car. Investigators recovered 26 shell casings from the crime scene.
In April 2024, a jury found Dazzamon Jones guilty of the murder of Edgar Lopez Jr. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. Brian Gray was held at the Kenton County Detention Center on an assault charge related to the initial altercation. Edgar Lopez Jr., a carpenter and a member of the Covington Christian Church, left behind a loving family, including his parents, a son, two sisters, and his girlfriend. His death was a significant loss to his community, who remembered him as a family man with a vibrant personality.
