In the quiet community of Science Hill, Kentucky, the life of 66-year-old Ardyth Ray Prather Jr. came to a sudden and violent end on November 7, 2023. A retired riverboat captain, he was found deceased in his residence from apparent gunshot wounds. This tragic event was not an isolated incident but the beginning of a grim discovery that would deeply affect the Prather family and their small town.
Law enforcement officers, responding to a late-night report of a shooting, arrived at the Prather home to find a scene of violence. Alongside the body of Ardyth Prather Jr., they found his wife, 65-year-old Joann Prather, who had been both shot and stabbed but was still alive. She was immediately transported to a hospital for treatment. The investigation quickly led them to a neighboring house on Raleigh Road where a blood-stained door hinted at more tragedy within. Inside, they discovered the body of 43-year-old Ardyth 'Trae' Prather III, the son of Ardyth and Joann Prather. He, too, had been fatally shot.
The focus of the investigation soon turned to a single suspect: Austin Ray Prather, the 20-year-old son of Trae Prather and the grandson of Ardyth Ray Prather Jr. Authorities believe Austin fled the scene before police arrived. A search for him was launched, and he was located and arrested in Evansville, Indiana, the following day, November 8, 2023, after investigators were able to track his cell phone.
Following his arrest, Austin Prather was held in Indiana before being extradited to Kentucky to face charges. A grand jury indicted him on two counts of murder for the deaths of his father and grandfather, and one count of attempted murder for the attack on his grandmother, Joann Prather. Additional charges included three counts of first-degree robbery and tampering with physical evidence. The community was left to mourn the loss of Ardyth Ray Prather Jr., a man remembered in his obituary as a graduate of Somerset High School, a member of the Somerset Masonic Lodge, and a devoted family man.
