In the late hours of a Saturday night in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 24-year-old Dion Jermaine Higgins, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On October 20, 2024, just before 11 p.m., police were called to the 400 block of East Fifth Street where they found Higgins suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The Fayette County Coroner's Office later confirmed Higgins' identity and
the cause of death as a gunshot wound. The Lexington Police Department's Robbery/Homicide Unit is heading the investigation into what has been classified as the city's 14th homicide of the year.
As of the latest reports, no suspects have been identified in connection with the shooting, and no arrests have been made. The investigation remains open and active, with law enforcement officials working to piece together the events that led to Higgins' death. Detectives with the Personal Crimes Section are continuing to investigate and have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the Lexington Police or to submit anonymous tips through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers. In the wake of the shooting, the city's 'One Lexington' program announced plans to be in the east end neighborhood to offer mental health support and resources to the community.
