On October 20, 2024, a homicide investigation was initiated by the Lexington Police Department following a shooting in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Dion Jermaine Higgins, was shot on the 400 block of East Fifth Street just before 11 p.m..

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Higgins suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to his injuries.
