A visit to Portland, Oregon, to celebrate a friend's birthday turned into a devastating tragedy for 25-year-old Isidahomen Ikhuoria, a Black/African American male from Lagos, Nigeria. In the early morning hours of June 23, 2023, Ikhuoria and his friend, Fortressen Oriakhi, were driving in the Hollywood District after enjoying a night of karaoke. Their celebration was abruptly and senselessly cut short when another vehicle pulled alongside theirs at an intersection.
A man inside, later identified as Bennett Miller, 25, fired ten shots into their car before speeding away.
The sudden burst of gunfire left Oriakhi dead at the scene, their car having crashed into a utility pole. Ikhuoria, critically wounded, was rushed to a nearby hospital. For a week, he fought for his life, with family members flying in, hoping for a miracle. Tragically, Isidahomen Ikhuoria succumbed to his injuries a week after the shooting. The medical examiner later confirmed that he died from homicide by gunshot wound. Known as "Isi" to his friends and family, he was remembered as a vibrant and kind young man who dreamed of becoming a filmmaker and ran his own photography and studio business back in Nigeria.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed a case of mistaken identity. Detectives from the Portland Police Bureau identified Bennett Miller as the gunman through witness interviews and phone records. According to a friend of Miller's who spoke with police, Miller, who had been dealing cocaine that night, admitted to the shooting, stating he had mistaken the two friends for other individuals with whom he had an issue. Approximately two months after the fatal shooting, on August 14, 2023, authorities arrested Miller in Portland's Mount Tabor neighborhood.
Bennett Miller was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He eventually pleaded guilty to the charges. In September 2024, a judge sentenced Miller to life in prison for the murders of Isidahomen Ikhuoria and Fortressen Oriakhi. Under the terms of his sentence, he will be eligible to request parole after serving a minimum of 32 years.
