On a late summer evening in Portland, Oregon, the life of 16-year-old Jaelin James Scott, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 27, 2020, a shooting erupted at Gateway Discovery Park in the Hazelwood neighborhood, leaving four people with gunshot wounds. While three of the victims, described as young adults, were expected to survive their injuries, Jaelin succumbed to his wounds.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner later confirmed that the cause of his death was a gunshot wound and ruled it a homicide.
The shooting occurred at approximately 9:02 p.m., prompting a significant police response. Arriving officers discovered the chaotic scene and the four victims, who were all transported to local hospitals. In the immediate aftermath, the Portland Police Bureau closed off the surrounding streets to conduct their investigation. Detectives canvassed the park for evidence and sought to piece together the events that led to the deadly violence.
In the days following the shooting, authorities publicly identified Jaelin James Scott as the deceased teenager. Despite their efforts, investigators struggled to identify a suspect. By September 1, 2020, the police announced that they had no "actionable suspect information" and appealed to the public for assistance. In partnership with Crime Stoppers of Oregon, a reward of up to $2,500 was offered for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case. As of now, there have been no publicly announced arrests or identification of any suspects in connection with the murder of Jaelin James Scott. His case is one of many unsolved homicides that occurred in Portland in 2020.
