In the summer of 2019, a young Black / African American man, 25-year-old Tylone Layette Tolliver, lost his life in Portland, Oregon. On the evening of July 28th, officers from the Portland Police Bureau were called to the intersection of Northeast Russell Street and Northeast Rodney Avenue following reports of a disturbance and a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Tylone Tolliver on the ground, having sustained a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response from medical crews, his injuries proved fatal, and he died at the scene.
The investigation into Tolliver's death led authorities to identify a father and son as the primary suspects. In the weeks following the incident, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office announced that an indictment had been filed against 46-year-old Horace Atchison and his 26-year-old son, Demetrius Atchison. The indictment detailed serious charges against both men in connection with the assault and subsequent homicide of Tylone Tolliver.
Horace Atchison faced the most severe charge of murder with a firearm, along with one count of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault. The indictment alleged that he intentionally caused Tolliver's death by use of a firearm. Demetrius Atchison was also implicated in the events of that day and was charged with one count of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault.
The apprehension of the two suspects occurred on separate dates. A court-authorized arrest warrant for Horace Atchison was issued on August 7, 2019. He was located and taken into custody in King County, Washington, before being extradited to Oregon and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on September 3, 2019. His son, Demetrius Atchison, was arrested on August 27, 2019, and was also booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.
