In the early hours of Sunday, November 5, 2023, a 30-year-old Hispanic/Latino female named Tyrae Hernandez was found shot to death in a parking lot in Portland, Oregon. The tragic discovery was made in the city's Cathedral Park neighborhood, a place known to be a popular gathering spot. Her death was later ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, caused by a gunshot wound.
The events leading to the discovery of her body began when Portland police responded to reports of gunfire in the
Cathedral Park area shortly before 5 a.m. However, upon their initial arrival around 5:15 a.m., they did not locate any evidence of a shooting or a victim. A little over twenty minutes later, the situation grew more grim when a passerby reported finding a person who had been shot. It was a family member of Hernandez, who had gone out searching for her, that ultimately found her in the parking lot near North Crawford Street and North Alta Avenue. The relative attempted to provide aid, but Hernandez succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene.
As the investigation into her death began, police learned that a vehicle associated with Hernandez was missing from the scene where her body was found. Later that morning, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the missing vehicle was discovered several miles away. It had been set on fire and was found along Northeast Marine Drive.
The suspect or suspects involved in the shooting had fled the scene before police initially arrived, and as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case and has asked the public for any information regarding the incident. Hernandez's family, who provided a photograph of her to the public, has requested privacy during their time of grief.
