On the evening of May 23, 2024, in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, the life of 31-year-old Laquonda Fuller-Hudson was tragically cut short. Just after 10 p.m., officers from the Portland Police Bureau's East Precinct were dispatched to an apartment in the 100 block of Southeast 146th Avenue following a report of shots fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered Fuller-Hudson deceased inside from what the Medical Examiner would later determine to be a homicide by gunshot wound.
In the initial aftermath, the suspect had fled the scene before police were called, and no immediate arrests were made. The Portland Police Homicide Unit began an investigation, closing off Southeast 146th Avenue between East Burnside Street and Southeast Stark Street to process the scene. Family and friends described Fuller-Hudson as a vibrant and loving woman with an electric smile. A mother of two children, ages 10 and two, she was remembered for her humbleness, strength, and determination to better herself for her family.
A suspect in the shooting was later taken into police custody. At the time of the announcement, the male suspect was being treated at a local hospital for injuries he sustained in a separate incident that occurred after the homicide but before he came into contact with law enforcement. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect. According to her family, Fuller-Hudson had only known the man for about two months, and they were in the early stages of getting to know one another. Her mother described him as "a wolf in sheep's clothing," stating she did not know him or his family. The family has emphasized that nobody was aware she was in a dangerous situation.
