On a Sunday evening, February 20, 2022, Adau Galuak Duop, a 25-year-old Black woman, was returning home from a grocery store trip with her family in Portland, Oregon. She was in the passenger seat of their vehicle, her fiancé was driving, and their two young sons, ages one and five, were in the back. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., as they were near the intersection of Southeast 128th Avenue and Southeast Foster Road, another car pulled alongside theirs and an occupant opened fire.
The hail
of gunfire struck all four members of the family. Adau was killed at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed she died from a gunshot wound in what was ruled a homicide. Her fiancé suffered a serious gunshot wound but was expected to survive. The couple's one-year-old son was shot in the arm, and their five-year-old son was hit in the leg. Both children were hospitalized and later released.
The investigation into the shooting remains active, with both the Portland Police Bureau and the FBI involved. As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Investigators have stated they do not believe the family was targeted for any specific reason, describing it as a seemingly random act of violence. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for Adau's murder.
Adau was a refugee from South Sudan who had come to the United States with her family for a safer life. She was a devoted mother who worked two jobs as an in-home caregiver while also attending Mt. Hood Community College with the goal of becoming a nurse. The case remains unsolved, leaving her family searching for justice.
