In the early morning hours of November 9, 2024, a tragic event unfolded inside a Portland, Oregon apartment in the Hazelwood neighborhood, leading to the death of 40-year-old Angel Patricia Geib, a White female. The incident occurred at approximately 2:06 a.m. when police responded to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Geib deceased at the scene. The medical examiner later confirmed that she died from a gunshot wound.

The initial investigation revealed that Michael J. English, a 33-year-old man from Portland, was present at the scene and had sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his hand. English was transported to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital for treatment. According to English's account to the police, the shooting was accidental. He claimed that he and Geib were in the bathroom, and his gun discharged while he was cleaning it, striking them both.

While at the hospital, English attempted to evade law enforcement. At around 9:45 a.m., after being allowed to change his clothes in private, he fled from the hospital. A search was immediately launched by the Portland Police Bureau, involving their Air Support Unit, drone unit, and K9 unit, with assistance from OHSU and VA Hospital Police. The search concluded less than two hours later when VA Police located and arrested English shortly before 11:00 a.m.

Following his arrest, Michael J. English was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He was initially charged with first-degree manslaughter and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Subsequently, in July 2025, English pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide with a firearm. He was sentenced to 100 months in prison, which is just over eight years, to be followed by three years of post-prison supervision. During his sentencing, English expressed remorse, stating that Angel meant the world to him. Geib's mother also spoke at the sentencing, urging him to reflect on the tragedy and make something of his life.
