In the summer warmth of a July morning in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 36-year-old Ja'Ron Rayshawn Starling was tragically cut short. On July 22, 2024, gunfire erupted in the parking lot of a laundromat at the intersection of 4th and Oak streets in the Old Louisville neighborhood. The chaotic scene left Starling, a father of five, fatally wounded.
Two women, one of whom was his girlfriend, were also injured in the shooting but survived.
Known to his loved ones as 'Nookie,' Jaron was remembered as a man with a great sense of humor who loved to make people laugh. An employee at GE Appliances, his sudden death left his family, including his five children, devastated. His sons, 13-year-old Jaden and 14-year-old Jakori, remembered their father as their best friend and an inspiration, particularly in teaching Jakori the game of football. The boys expressed immense pain and a desire for justice for their father.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled, prompting a multi-state manhunt. On August 30, U.S. Marshals apprehended Desmond Shaw in Coffeeville, Mississippi. Shaw was identified as the primary suspect in the shooting. He was subsequently extradited back to Louisville to face multiple charges, including murder, assault, criminal mischief, and theft of a firearm. During a court appearance in September, a judge set Shaw's bond at $250,000 as the legal proceedings against him commenced.
