In the quiet community of Marlborough, Massachusetts, the life of 28-year-old Kethlen Paula Alves Trindade was tragically cut short on the morning of November 29, 2023. A native of Governador Valadares, Brazil, Kethlen had moved to the United States just two years prior, filled with aspirations of achieving the American dream and providing support for her family back home. Friends described her as a "sweetheart" who was diligently working to build a better life for herself and her loved ones.

The events that led to her untimely death began to unfold the night before, following an argument with her ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Marlon Moreira Costa. The dispute, which took place at his residence, reportedly involved threats made against Kethlen. The following morning, Costa went to Kethlen's home on Rice Street. In a desperate and violent act, he forced his way into the house through a window.

Inside the residence, the situation escalated quickly. Two women and a child, who were also residents of the home, were present and managed to flee outside, where they frantically reported the shooting to the police. By the time law enforcement and a SWAT team arrived and entered the home, they discovered a devastating scene. Kethlen Paula Alves Trindade had been fatally shot. Her assailant, Marlon Moreira Costa, was also found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in what investigators determined to be a murder-suicide.

The investigation, conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and both state and Marlborough police, confirmed the tragic sequence of events. The preliminary findings indicated that Costa, after breaking into the home, threatened Kethlen again before shooting her and then turning the gun on himself. The case highlighted the lethal consequences of domestic violence. In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to assist Kethlen's family with the expenses of her cremation, with the intention of returning her ashes to her family in Brazil, a final journey home for a young woman whose dreams were so violently extinguished.
