On the night of August 2, 2024, in Waltham, Massachusetts, a young Black woman named Zharia Wilcox, 24, was found with a fatal gunshot wound in a parking lot next to an apartment building on Second Avenue. Emergency services responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m., but she was pronounced dead from her injuries. The events leading up to her death reportedly began with a personal dispute that escalated into violence.
The investigation into her death revealed a tumultuous relationship with
her partner, Melanie Williams, 30, of Waltham. At the time of the incident, Wilcox had been staying at Williams' apartment. An altercation had reportedly broken out between the two, allegedly fueled by disparaging remarks Wilcox had made about Williams online. This dispute is said to have drawn in two of Williams' close friends, Kaire Holman, 31, of Quincy, and Curtessa Franklin.
Prior to the shooting, an altercation involving a group of people took place outside the apartment building where Williams lived and Wilcox was a frequent visitor. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Williams striking Wilcox. Following this initial assault, Williams, Holman, and Franklin are alleged to have beaten Wilcox before leading her out of the building. As they moved toward the street and into the adjacent parking lot, witnesses reported hearing sounds consistent with gunshots. Shortly after, Williams was allegedly seen at a nearby store with what appeared to be blood on her pants.
The subsequent investigation led to the arrests of all three women. Initially, on August 5, 2024, Melanie Williams was charged with assault and battery on a household or family member in connection with the physical altercation that preceded the shooting. Later, the charges against her were upgraded to first-degree murder. Kaire Holman was also charged with murder. Ballistics evidence played a key role in her arrest, as two projectiles recovered from Wilcox's body matched a. 380 firearm registered to Holman. Ammunition of the same caliber was found in both her vehicle and her apartment. Text messages allegedly sent by Holman two days after the shooting indicated that her firearm had been used. Curtessa Franklin was also charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Zharia Wilcox.
