In the parking lot of a Market Basket in Lynn, Massachusetts, the life of 17-year-old Kai Burgos was cut short on the evening of June 15, 2024. A Black or African American male, Burgos was found by Lynn police officers inside a crashed car that had come to rest in a ravine adjacent to the shopping center at 40 Federal Street. He was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders rushed him to Salem Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect: 18-year-old Adrian Pena of Lynn. However, Pena had fled the country in an attempt to evade capture. A collaborative effort involving the Lynn Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, the U.S. Marshals Service, and law enforcement officials in the Dominican Republic led to Pena's apprehension on July 16 in the Dominican Republic. His arrest marked a significant breakthrough in the case, bringing a sense of hope for justice to the victim's family.
Following his capture, Pena was extradited to the United States to face legal proceedings. He was first arraigned in Miami on a fugitive from justice charge before being returned to Massachusetts. In Salem Superior Court, Adrian Pena pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and carrying a firearm without a license in connection with the death of Kai Burgos. As the legal process unfolds, the motive for the shooting remains a central part of the ongoing investigation.
