In the early hours of September 2, 2023, a joyous gathering on Essex Street in Lynn, Massachusetts, turned into a scene of tragedy. Jandriel Heredia, a 21-year-old male from Revere, was among the attendees at a party celebrating a friend's departure for college. At approximately 2:20 a.m., the celebration was shattered by a drive-by shooting that sprayed gunfire into the crowd.
Heredia was struck by the gunfire and rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Another man, 25-year-old Abraham Diaz of Lynn, was also killed in the attack, and five other people were wounded.
The brazen violence of the act prompted a significant law enforcement response. Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but a targeted attack. The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Lynn Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, unfolded over several months. Family members, wracked with grief, remembered Jandriel as a peaceful and hardworking young man who was the heart of their family. His mother, Ivelisse Garcia, described her son as a "nice, decent young man" and expressed her disbelief that a celebration of a milestone could end in such heartbreak.
In July 2024, nearly a year after the fatal shooting, authorities announced a major breakthrough in the case. Six individuals were charged in connection with the murders of Jandriel Heredia and Abraham Diaz. The suspects were identified as Justin Alba, 25, of Peabody; and Lynn residents Darwin Batista, 20; Yefferson Vallecillo Cambar, 22; Carlos Ramirez Corniel, 16; Leonardo Espinoza, 15; and Abel Severino Reyes, 21. All six face two counts of murder. Several of the suspects also face additional charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Further investigations have suggested a connection between the shooting and gang activity, with a federal case being filed against an unnamed defendant, an alleged member of the Trinitario gang, in connection to the murders.
