In the early morning hours of July 20, 2024, a gathering in a Lowell, Massachusetts parking lot turned deadly, claiming the life of 43-year-old Hispanic male, Tatu Jose Ortiz. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Swaminarayan Temple on Middlesex Street, where a group of people had convened, reportedly drinking and setting off fireworks.
An altercation broke out among some individuals at the party.
Friends and family recall that Ortiz, a father and a beloved member of his family, was attempting to act as a peacemaker to de-escalate the conflict when shots were fired. Ortiz was struck by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. Two other individuals, a 34-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, also sustained non-fatal injuries during the shooting.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested 38-year-old Paul Garcia of Dover, New Hampshire, in connection with the fatal shooting. Garcia was taken into custody at a residence in Lawrence and subsequently faced multiple charges, including murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a firearm. At his arraignment, where he did not show his face, the family of Jose Ortiz expressed their grief and relief as the judge ordered Garcia to be held without bail. Garcia is due back in court for further proceedings.
