On July 20, 2024, Jose Ortiz, a 43-year-old resident of Lowell, Massachusetts, lost his life to gun violence. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Swaminarayan Temple on Middlesex Street in Lowell. According to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and Lowell police, the shooting happened shortly before 5 a.m. when a fight broke out among a crowd of about 30 people who were partying, drinking, and setting off fireworks.
